◇   never fail to : 틀림없이 ~하다

= be sure to

   e.g.)   He never fails towrite to his mother every week. (그는 매주 잊지 않고 어머니에게 편지를 한다. )

◇   next to none : 최상의, 최고의              

= second to none = the best = the highest = supreme

   e.g.)   In golf he is next to none. (골프에서는 그보다 더 잘하는 사람은 없다.)

◇   no sooner ~ than : ~하자 마자             

= scarcely ~ when (=before) = hardy ~ when (=before) = as soon as = the moment

= the instant = instantly = directly = immediately

   e.g.)    No soonerhad the idea occurred to him thanhe was sure of it.

            (=As soon asthe idea occurred to him, he was sure of it.)

            (착상이 떠오르자마자 그는 확신이 섰다.)

◇   no longer : 이미 ~이 아닌

= not any longer

   e.g.)   He is no longerliving here. (그는 이제 여기에 살지 않는다. )

◇  not to mention: ~은 말할 것도 없이         

 = not to speak of = to say nothing of = let alone

   e.g.)   He can speak French, not to mentionEnglish. (그는 영어는 말할 것도 없이 불어도 말할 줄 안다. )

◇  none the less: 그럼에도 불구하고; 여전히

 = nevertheless = despite =in spite of = in the face of = in the teeth of = for all =with all

   e.g.)   He has fault is a but I like him none the less. (그는 결점이 있으나, 나는 여전히 그를 좋아한다. )

1. 동명사의 용법

   동명사 - 동사와 명사의 역할을 함. 동명사는 목적어‧보어를 취할 뿐만 아니라

            부사(구)의 수식을 받으며 주어 · 목적어 · 보어로 쓰인다.

   (1) Playingtennis is a lot of fun.              [주어]

       SpeakingEnglish well is very difficult.

       = To speak English well is very difficult.

   (2) Tom loves fishing.                           [목적어]

       It began rainingin the afternoon.

       = It began to rain in the afternoon.

   (3) My hobby is drawingpictures.

       The only thing that he likes is watchingTV. [보어]

       = The only thing that he likes is to watch TV.

     ※ 전치사 다음에 동사를 쓸 때에는 동명사를 쓴다.

          ex) He is thinking of buyinga new bicycle.
 

문법의종류는 아주 많이있죠?

그 중에서도 문법안에 또 문법에대해 배울것이 너무많은 것 같습니다.

동명사두번째를 살펴보도록 할게요 ^^

동명사의 의미상의 주어

 (1)ⓐ He doesn't like mygoing there.

       ⓑ I heard of your father('s)coming back home.

      ※ 동명사의 의미상의 주어는 소유격으로 나타내지만, 명사일 경우에는 목적격을쓸 수 있다.

          ex) I am sure of his[him] passing the examination.

              = I am sure that he will pass the examination.

          ((cf.)) I wish him to pass the examination.

                  I remember Tom('s) saying so.

   (2) Seeingis believing.

       동명사의 의미상의 주어가 일반인일 경우에는 생략한다.

          ex) Reading English is difficult, but speaking it is even more difficult.

          ((cf.)) I began reading a short story.

                  (→ reading의 의미상의 주어는 I이므로 그 앞에 my를 생략)
 

    ※동명사의 의미상의 주어

     1. 의미상의 주어가 본주어와 같은 경우

       ex 1) He is proud that he is a scholar.

             = He is proud of being a scholar.

          2) I am ashamed that I am poor.

             = I am ashamed of being poor.

     2. 의미상의 주어가 목적어와 같은 경우

       ex 1) I punished him because he was dishonest.

             = I punished him for being dishonest.

          2) I thanked him for helping me.

     3. 소유격이 의미상의 주어가 되는 경우

       ex 1) That heis rich           is known to all.

             = For himto be rich     is known to all. (부정사 구문)

             = Hisbeing rich          is known to all. (동명사 구문)

          2) I am ashamed of his[her, Tom's, Tom] being foolish.

          3) We must allow for the train being late.

          　 동명사의 의미상의 주어는 원칙적으로 소유격을 사용하지만,

              의미상의 주어가 명사일 때에는 소유격을 써도 되고 목적격을

              써도 된다. (예문 2)에서 Tom's와 Tom 모두 가능)

     4. 동명사의 의미상의 주어가 일반인을 가리킬 때는 생략한다.

       ex 1) Studying English is no easy task.

          2) Taking a walk is a good exercise.

    ※동명사의 시제

        ◆ 동명사의 형태

       ex 1) He is proud that he is rich

             = He is proud of being rich.

          2) He was proud of being rich.

             = He was proud of his father's being rich.

          3) I am ashamed that he was[has been] poor.

             = I am ashamed of his having been poor.

          4) I was ashamed that Tom had been poor.

             = I was ashamed of Tom having been poor.

          5) He regrets that he wrote[has written] the letter.

             = He regrets having written the letter

동명사와 부정사의 비교

   (1) 동명사만을 목적어로 취하는 동사

       - enjoy, finish, mind, give up, deny 등.

       ex 1) He enjoys listening to music.

           2) Have you finished writing a letter?

           3) Would you mind opening the door?

   (2) 부정사만을 목적어로 위하는 동사

      - want, hope, decide, plan, promise, choose 등.

        ex 1) I want to be a doctor.

           2) Do you hope to see her again?

           3) I have decided to go to a vocational high school.

           4) He promised never to smoke again.

   (3) 동명사와 부정사 둘 다 목적어로 취할 수 있는 동사

       - love, like, hate, begin, continue

        ex 1) The baby began crying. = The baby began to cry.

   (4) 동명사와 부정사를 목적어로 쓰는 경우 의미상의 차이가 있는 경우

       - stop, try, forget 등

       ex 1) They stopped fighting. [그들은 싸우기를 중지하였다.]

              They stopped to fight. [그들은 싸우기 위해 걸음을 멈추었다.]

           2) He tried doing it. [그는 시험삼아 그것을 해 보았다.]

               He tried to do it. [그는 그것을 해 보려고 노력했다.]

           3) I remember saying so. [나는 그렇게 말한 것을 기억하고 있다.]

              = I remember that I have said so.        [과거에 한 일]

             I remember to say so. [나는 그렇게 말할 것을 기억하고 있다.]

              = I remember that I will have to say so. [미래에 할 일]

           4) I forget meeting him. [나는 그를 만난 것을 잊고 있다.]

              = I forget that I met him.

              I forget to meet him. [나는 그를 만날 것을 잊고 있다.]

              = I forget that I will meet him.

     　※ 목적어로서의 부정사와 동명사 정리

       ex 1) He wishes to be alone.

          2) I hope to succeed.

          3) He promise to be here tonight.

          4) He enjoys reading a novel.

          5) It is difficult to give up smoking in a day.

          6) I finished reading the novel.

          7) The woman began to laugh.

             The woman began laughing.

          8) I remember seeing her before.

             = I remember that I saw her before.

            I remember to see him tomorrow.

            = I remember that I will see him tomorrow.

          9) I forget posting the letter.

            Don't forget to post the letter.

         10) I stopped smoking.   I stopped to smoke.

         11) I don't like swimming  (일반적 습관)

            I don't like to swim now. (일시적이며 구체적인 진술)

         12) He tried moving the piano. (피아노를 옮겼음)

            He tried to move the piano. (시도 만했지 옮기지는 않았다)

         13) He went on talking about his accident.

            He went on to talk about his accident.

*Tip.

동명사와 관용적 표현

   (1) be busy ～ing  = ～하느라고 바쁘다

       ex 1) We are busy preparing for the examination.

   (2) It is no use[good] ～ing = It is of no use to～ = ～해야 소용없다

        ex 1) It is no use talking to him.

              = It is (of) no use to talk to him.

              = It is useless to talk to him.

              = It is of no use talking to him.

   (3) keep + 목적어 + from ～ing  = 누구에게 -을 못하게 하다

        ex 1) The snow kept me from coming here.

              = I couldn't come here because of the snow.
